You may know pieces of what I’ve been building with My Musical Village, or you’ve heard me talk about community and music and connection enough times to know there’s a much bigger vision underneath all of it…

Well, I’ve finally been sitting down and putting words to what that bigger vision actually looks like… and I’d love to share that with you now!

…and if you’re just stumbling across this and my words resonate with your SOUL, this is for you too!!

At the heart of My Musical Village is a really simple belief…

Happy families thrive in connected communities!

And I believe music is one of the most accessible tools and universal languages we have for creating that connection!

But not JUST professional music… ALL types of music and sound exploration!

Singing, rhythm, movement, vibration, listening, playing, experimenting, learning, and making a joyful noise… TOGETHER!

I strongly believe that everyone is musical, and music is for EVERYONE!

…and I’d like to help build a more connected community around that idea…

I see SO many incredible people already doing pieces of this work throughout Rancho Cordova and Sacramento; musicians, bands, music educators, band and choir directors, holistic practitioners, artists, venues, music stores and studios, local businesses, schools, nonprofits, youth organizations and more!

And I don’t want to replace or compete with any of them…

What I want is for our community to COMMUNICATE and support each other!

I personally would love to build the scaffolding that will make it easier for community members and resources to connect, support each other and create beautiful things… TOGETHER!

Maybe this idea eventually becomes a nonprofit… Maybe it’s an association? Or a guild? Collective? Mutual aid? …or maybe it’s something else entirely new.

That’s part of what I’m inviting you to help me figure out!

I imagine us meeting monthly to share what we’ve been individually pouring our souls into, and then finding ways to support each other’s visions…

What does your organization, project, or idea need to get the ball rolling?

What do you already have that someone else could benefit from?

What funding did you find, but would need to partner with a nonprofit to qualify for?

Who do you need to meet? What could we accomplish together?

And then after business-y time is done… I see us making MUSIC!

Jamming and singing together to co-regulate… giving folks opportunities to share something they’ve been learning, teach us something, or try something they’ve never done before!

Because I don’t want us just talking about connected communities all the time… I want us practicing being one!

…and from there, I can see this becoming SO many things…

More local musicians being fairly paid to perform in their own communities.

More community music in parks, outside local businesses, and in the public spaces we already share.

More family-friendly concerts and gatherings… Singing circles… Open mics… Kids karaoke…

Beginner music-making opportunities for grown-ups.

Music and emotional-regulation workshops.

More music inside schools and youth programs.

Better access to instruments, funded lessons, rentals, and professional equipment.

And fewer unnecessary barriers keeping people from making music in their own communities.

I want us advocating for our local musicians and artists too… encouraging our cities, organizations, businesses, and community event organizers to look hyper-locally first and fairly compensate the people who are already here enriching their own neighborhoods.

I envision musicians talking to holistic practitioners who work with sound, movement, breath, vibration and regulation…

I envision educators and nonprofits working together to bring music back to our local schools…

I envision venues, businesses, and families knowing and supporting the musicians who live nearby…

I envision local musicians and businesses hiring local artists, photographers and designers so we’re supporting human creativity with more human creativity…

I envision organizations sharing resources and pursuing funding together instead of everybody trying to solve the same problems alone…

And I envision regular ALL-AGES community music gatherings where we come back often enough to actually get to know each other.

Not just another event where we stand next to a bunch of strangers for two hours and go home…

I mean gathering to sing, make music, play, regulate, learn, share, and spend time with our neighbors. Babies, kids, teenagers, grown-ups, elders, professional musicians, and people who don’t think they’re musical at all.

Something consistent enough that we stop being anonymous to each other.

Then eventually, I want to be able to SEE OUR Village on a map…

Our website will feature a living directory where the people within it maintain their own profiles, events and resources for FREE!

A place where a parent can find a music teacher… A musician can find a venue… A teacher can find an instrument resource… A nonprofit can find a performer… A holistic practitioner can find a musician to collaborate with… and a neighbor can simply find somewhere to sing with other neighbors!

A cyclical local ecosystem where the community keeps supporting the community…

A local business hires a local musician. That musician hires a local artist to make their flyer. Families discover both of them through the Village. Those families support the business. Community resources help another kid access an instrument or lessons… and eventually maybe that kid becomes another music maker contributing right back into the Village.

Resources moving around our community instead of constantly moving out of it.

And while professional musicians and educators are incredibly important to this, the doorway has to stay WIDE open to all…

You do not have to call yourself a musician to belong here!

One of the things I care about most is helping people feel safe enough to use their voices, experiment with sound, try something new, and discover that music was never something they had to earn or be born with access to!

Music belongs to you simply because you’re human!

And I think making music together gives us opportunities to regulate together, communicate beyond words, care for the people and places around us, and in turn become less anonymous to one another.

That’s ultimately what I’m trying to build… A more connected community with MUSIC as the thread helping us weave it together.

And I don’t want to build the whole thing myself and then hand some employees their assigned roles…

I want to provide the scaffolding and support for YOUR visions too!

Then I want people with completely different talents, experiences, resources, relationships and perspectives to look at it and say:

“Oh! I know where I fit into this!”

If something in here makes you excited, or immediately makes you think of something you could contribute, someone who should be involved, or something this could become… I want you in on all the action RIGHT at the beginning, please!
